The Therapy, Explained

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in Modesto

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an advanced, oxygen-based therapy in which you breathe a higher concentration of oxygen inside a pressurized chamber — helping deliver more oxygen to the tissues that need it. At Generations Wellness, every course is physician-directed from the first assessment to the last session.

Definition

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

HBOT helps deliver higher levels of oxygen to the body's tissues in a pressurized chamber. At normal air pressure, almost all of your oxygen travels bound to red blood cells. Under gently increased pressure, extra oxygen dissolves directly into your blood plasma — so it can reach tissues even where circulation is compromised.

That increased oxygen availability may support the body's natural healing response, which is why HBOT is commonly used as part of a physician-directed care plan alongside — never instead of — your existing medical treatment.

The Mechanism

How HBOT Works

Pressure, Oxygen, and Your Blood

Inside the chamber, air pressure is gradually increased while you breathe a higher concentration of oxygen. Under that pressure, your lungs take in more oxygen than they can at normal pressure — and the surplus dissolves straight into your plasma, lymph, and other fluids.

Why Oxygen Delivery Matters for Healing Tissue

Healing is oxygen-hungry work. Wounded, swollen, or radiation-affected tissue often has impaired circulation — exactly where oxygen struggles to arrive. By raising the amount of oxygen your blood can carry, HBOT may support the body's natural healing response where it's needed most.

Your Visit

What to Expect at Your Session

No mystery, no surprises — here is the full arc of a session at our Modesto center.

  • Before You Start: The Physician Assessment

Every course begins with a mandatory physician assessment — your medical history, current medications, and an ear and lung check. HBOT starts only after medical review confirms it's appropriate for your condition.

  • During Your Session

The start feels like an airplane taking off — gentle ear pressure you relieve by swallowing or yawning. Then you simply rest: nap, listen to music, or relax. Our staff is in communication with you the entire time. Sessions typically run about 90–120 minutes, including pressurization.

  • After Your Session

Most people step out and get on with their day — many drive themselves home. Mild fatigue afterward is possible and normal. Your care team checks in, and your progress is tracked across the course.

Typical Treatment Protocol

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

20–40 sessions

Many patients complete a course of 20–40 sessions, usually one session per day, several days a week — depending on the condition being treated, your response to therapy, and physician recommendations. Consistency across the course matters more than any single session.

Safety First

Safety and Physician Supervision

HBOT at Generations Wellness is delivered under the medical direction of Dr. Rajwinder Singh Bahia, MD, with screening before you start and monitoring throughout your course.

  • Physician screening before any course begins — no exceptions.
  • Chamber safety rules: 100% cotton clothing; no petroleum-based products, cosmetics, or electronics inside the oxygen-rich chamber.
  • Trained staff in communication with you for the entire session.
  • Honest side-effect guidance: the most common effects are temporary ear or sinus pressure and mild fatigue; serious complications are rare with proper screening.

Candidacy

Is HBOT Right for You?

That's a question we answer honestly — and individually. Your physician determines candidacy based on your condition, your history, and the current medical evidence. HBOT complements, never replaces, the treatment prescribed by your doctors, and we coordinate with your existing providers so it fits your overall care plan.

Important

A physician assessment is mandatory before starting HBOT. Treatment is provided only after medical review confirms that HBOT is appropriate for your condition.

Quick Answers

Questions About HBOT?

What does an HBOT session feel like?

Most people compare the start of a session to an airplane taking off: gentle ear pressure you relieve by swallowing or yawning. Once at pressure, you simply rest — many patients nap, listen to music, or watch a show.

How much does HBOT cost, and does insurance cover it?

Costs depend on the number of sessions your physician recommends. Insurance — including Medicare — may cover HBOT for certain FDA-recognized conditions. We review pricing and coverage questions with you clearly before you commit to a course.

Do I need a doctor's referral to start?

No referral is needed to contact us — but a physician assessment is mandatory before anyone begins HBOT at our center. If your doctor referred you, we'll coordinate with them and keep them informed.
