Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Athletes: What the Sports Recovery Research Shows

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not an FDA-cleared indication for sports injuries, athletic performance or exercise recovery. The FDA lists sports injuries among the uses hyperbaric chambers have not been cleared for, and Generations Wellness does not market or offer "recovery" sessions to athletes. The chambers professional athletes are photographed in are usually soft-sided units at about 1.3 atmospheres, a very different exposure from medical HBOT. Not an FDA-cleared indication

Hyperbaric chambers are FDA-cleared for a specific list of conditions. Athletic performance, sports injuries and exercise recovery are not on it, and they are not among the UHMS-recognized indications. The FDA specifically lists sports injuries among uses that are not cleared. Generations Wellness does not market or provide HBOT for these purposes. Background

Why Athletes Use Hyperbaric Chambers

There have been widely publicized reports of professional athletes using hyperbaric chambers as part of their routines. Those reports don't tell us whether the chambers made any difference, and they aren't evidence.

The reasons usually given are appealing: more oxygen delivered to tired muscles, less inflammation, and faster clearing of the by-products of hard exercise. These ideas are plausible enough that researchers have tested them, and those tests are summarized below.

The pressure mismatch

Here is the detail that matters most. The chambers athletes use at home or in training facilities are usually soft-sided units that reach about 1.3 ATA (atmospheres absolute), often with oxygen from a concentrator. Medical HBOT is delivered in hard-shell chambers, and almost all of the recovery trials used medical pressures of 2.0 to 2.4 ATA.

Making sense of the mixed picture

The older Cochrane review and the newer meta-analysis don't quite contradict each other. They mostly measured different things. The Cochrane review looked at pain and real injuries like sprains, and found nothing helpful. The 2025 analysis looked mainly at blood markers of muscle damage and soreness scores after hard exercise, and reported faster return to baseline. The Limits

What the Research Does Not Show

  • Not FDA clearance. Sports injuries are named by the FDA as not cleared.
  • Not that soft 1.3 ATA chambers do anything measurable. Almost all trials used medical chambers at 2.0 ATA or higher.
  • Not better athletic performance. The 2021 meta-analysis found no consistent performance effect.
  • Not faster ligament or tendon healing. Evidence is inconclusive at best, and Cochrane found no benefit for sprains.
  • Not that lower lactate means more games won. Lab markers don't automatically translate into results on the field.
  • Not safety of frequent, long-term use in healthy people. Repeated exposure carries risks, including ear and sinus barotrauma, temporary nearsightedness and, rarely, oxygen toxicity seizures. Read about side effects that accumulate with repeated exposure.
  • Not a comparison with other recovery methods. There is no head-to-head evidence comparing HBOT with cryotherapy, compression or sleep, so no claim of equivalence or superiority can be made.

When an Athlete Does Have a Cleared Indication

Athletes are people first, and injuries sometimes lead to conditions that are on the cleared list. When that happens, HBOT may support care as part of a physician-directed plan. Examples include:
