Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Long COVID: What the Research Shows
The evidence is mixed and early. One sham-controlled trial of 40 sessions reported better thinking skills and symptoms; a trial of 10 sessions found no difference from placebo. Long COVID is not an FDA-cleared indication for HBOT, and Generations Wellness does not offer HBOT for it.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not an FDA-cleared indication for long COVID, and Generations Wellness does not market or offer HBOT for that purpose. The research is genuinely interesting and genuinely unsettled. In 2022 an Israeli team reported that 40 sessions of HBOT improved attention, executive function and several symptoms compared with a sham chamber in 73 people with post-COVID cognitive complaints, and that gains persisted more than a year later in the people they could follow. In 2025 a Swedish trial of 10 sessions in 80 people found no difference from placebo on its main physical-function measures. Hyperbaric chambers are FDA-cleared for a specific list of conditions. Long COVID is not on it, and it is not among the UHMS-recognized indications. Background
Why People Ask About HBOT for Long COVID
Long COVID, which the World Health Organization calls post COVID-19 condition, describes symptoms that usually begin within three months of a COVID-19 infection and last at least two months without another explanation. Common complaints include fatigue, "brain fog," trouble concentrating, poor sleep, shortness of breath and pain. For many people, these symptoms make work and family life hard, and there is still no established treatment that works for everyone. It is understandable that people look for options.
Researchers have proposed several reasons symptoms may persist. These include injury to the smallest blood vessels, ongoing inflammation in the brain and body, and problems with how cells produce energy. These are hypotheses, not settled facts.
Hyperbaric researchers have suggested that HBOT might play a role because, in other settings, high-pressure oxygen has been studied for its effects on new blood-vessel growth and inflammatory signaling. What the Research Shows
The table lists the main published studies, in order. Pay attention to the "n" (number of participants), whether a sham or placebo group was used, and the number of sessions.

Why two good trials can disagree
Both randomized trials were double-blind and used a comparison group, which makes them stronger than most HBOT research. So why did they reach different conclusions? The most obvious difference is dose. The Israeli trial used 40 sessions over about two months; the Swedish trial used 10. The trials also measured different things. The Israeli trial's main outcome was cognitive testing, while the Swedish trial's main outcome was physical functioning on a questionnaire called RAND-36. And the participants were not identical: the Israeli trial enrolled people with cognitive complaints specifically.
None of this tells us which result is "right." It tells us the question is still open. A larger trial using a longer course and patient-relevant outcomes would be needed to settle it.

Trials of HBOT for post-COVID condition have been registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, including NCT04842448. If you are interested in HBOT for long COVID, a registered trial is the setting where it is delivered under research oversight, with the results feeding back into what everyone knows. The Limits
What the Research Does Not Show
It is just as important to be clear about what these studies cannot tell you:
- Not that HBOT cures long COVID. No study claims that, and the only large controlled trials disagree.
- Not that results apply to everyone. Participants in the positive trial were mostly middle-aged adults with cognitive complaints lasting at least three months. People with other symptom patterns were not studied the same way.
- Not that a short course works. The 10-session trial found no difference from placebo.
- Not the right dose. No study has compared different numbers of sessions or pressures head to head.
- Not long-term durability. The only follow-up beyond a year had no control group and followed fewer than half of the original participants.
- Not safety in people with lung damage from COVID. Lung disease can be a relative contraindication for HBOT, and people with significant lung injury need careful individual assessment. Read about relative contraindications including lung disease.

HBOT also carries its own side effects, even when it is used for cleared indications. The most common are ear and sinus pressure, temporary nearsightedness and tiredness. Rare but serious risks include oxygen toxicity seizures and lung injury from pressure changes.
Reading the Numbers
How to Read "Significant Improvement in Cognitive Scores"
Headlines about the 2022 trial often say HBOT "significantly improved" cognition. That's accurate, but the phrase is easy to misread.
Effect size
An effect size of about 0.5 is usually described as moderate. It means the average HBOT participant scored about half a standard deviation better than the average sham participant on the test battery. That's a real, measurable difference on a group level. It is not the same as saying everyone's brain fog lifted.
Group averages versus individuals
Trial results describe averages. Some people in the HBOT group improved a lot, some a little, and some not at all. A study average can't predict how any one person will respond.
Comparison groups improve too
In the Swedish trial, both the HBOT group and the placebo group improved. That pattern is common in conditions where fatigue and symptoms are self-reported. Time, attention, routine and hope all affect how people feel. That is why a sham or placebo group matters so much, and why an uncontrolled registry reporting "improvement" tells us much less than a controlled trial. Cost & Access
Not an FDA-Cleared Indication, and Why That Matters for Cost
Because long COVID is not a cleared indication, Medicare and commercial insurers do not cover HBOT for it. Any clinic offering it is charging self-pay for an investigational use, often for a course of 40 sessions. At the published national range of $150 to $450 per session, that adds up quickly.
