Compare Hyperbaric Chamber Types and HBOT Settings

Hyperbaric chambers differ in four ways: the pressure they reach, the shell they are built from, how many people they hold, and where they are used. Those differences decide whether what you receive is medical hyperbaric oxygen therapy at all. These guides explain each one in plain language.

The Four Ways Hyperbaric Chambers Differ

"Hyperbaric chamber" is a broad label. It covers zippered fabric units sold for home use, hard-shell chambers in outpatient medical centers, and room-sized chambers in hospitals. If you are comparing options, it helps to sort them along four lines. The first two, pressure and shell, matter most, because they decide the oxygen dose you actually receive. HBOT at our center uses hard-shell monoplace chambers under physician direction.

ATA stands for atmospheres absolute. Sea level is 1.0 ATA, so 2.0 ATA is twice normal air pressure. Clearing Up Confusion

Not HBOT at All: Oxygen Bars and Normobaric Oxygen

Some products use the word "oxygen" in ways that sound similar to hyperbaric therapy but are not. Two come up often.

Oxygen bars

An oxygen bar lets you breathe slightly enriched air through a nasal tube at normal room pressure. There is no chamber and no added pressure. It is not medical treatment, and none of the evidence for hyperbaric oxygen therapy applies to it.

Normobaric oxygen

"Normobaric" means normal pressure. Oxygen from a home concentrator or a hospital mask is normobaric oxygen. It is an important medical treatment in its own right, prescribed for many lung and heart conditions. But it is a different thing from HBOT. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy combines near-100% oxygen with raised pressure, and it is the pressure that lets far more oxygen dissolve into the liquid part of your blood.

If a service does not put you inside a pressurized chamber breathing near-100% oxygen at 1.4 ATA or more, it does not meet the UHMS definition of HBOT.

Monoplace vs. Multiplace Chambers

Medical hyperbaric chambers come in two main forms, and fire-safety code NFPA 99 names them by class.

  • Monoplace (Class B). A single-person chamber. You lie inside the chamber, and the whole chamber is filled with oxygen at the prescribed pressure. Staff stay outside the chamber and in communication with you throughout.
  • Multiplace (Class A). A larger chamber for two or more people, usually including an attendant inside. The chamber is pressurized with air, and each patient breathes oxygen through a mask or hood.

Neither type is simply "better." Both deliver medical HBOT when the pressure vessel is built to ASME PVHO-1 and operated under NFPA 99 rules by trained staff. Multiplace chambers are most often found in hospitals, where an attendant may need to be at a critically ill patient's side. Monoplace chambers are widely used for scheduled outpatient courses.

Making a Choice

What to Compare Before You Choose

Price is the easiest thing to compare and the least useful on its own. A low-cost session in a soft chamber and a session of medical HBOT are not the same product. Before you decide where to go, compare these points:

  • Physician assessment. Will a physician review your history and decide whether HBOT is appropriate before any sessions?
  • Pressure and oxygen. What pressure and what gas will you breathe, and who sets them?
  • Chamber type and standards. Is it a hard-shell pressure vessel built and operated to recognized codes?
  • Honest claims. Does the provider describe HBOT's FDA-cleared uses accurately, and say plainly when a use is not cleared?
  • Accreditation, staff training and pricing. Ask about each directly, and get pricing explained before you commit.

Comparing Chambers: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a medical-grade hyperbaric chamber?

It is a hard-shell pressure vessel built to the ASME PVHO-1 code and operated under NFPA 99 fire-safety rules. It can reach the 2.0 ATA or more on near-100% oxygen that recognized medical indications use.

Monoplace or multiplace: which is better?

Neither is better in general. Monoplace chambers hold one person in an oxygen atmosphere, and multiplace chambers hold several people breathing oxygen by mask or hood. Both deliver medical HBOT when properly built and staffed.

Is an oxygen bar the same as hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

No. An oxygen bar offers slightly enriched air at normal pressure. It is not a medical treatment and does not meet the definition of HBOT.
